Position summary
HUTCHMED is seeking an experienced scientist to lead antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) and related antibody conjugate programs within AI for Discovery. You will own the integrated scientific plan from target and mechanism hypotheses through antibody engineering, ADC design, experimental proof of concept and candidate qualification. Partnering with computational, conjugation, biology and DMPK teams, you will evaluate antibody, linker-payload and conjugation choices and use each round of results to guide design and molecule progression.
Key responsibilities
• Own ADC program hypotheses, target product profiles, differentiation and benchmark plans; define measurable discovery gates and candidate selection criteria with Discovery.
• Develop integrated ADC strategies with relevant specialists, linking target and epitope selection, antibody format, linker-payload, conjugation site and drug-antibody ratio (DAR) to the intended mechanism.
• Guide antibody selection and engineering for conjugated therapeutics, including specificity, internalization, trafficking, species cross-reactivity, tumor selectivity and developability.
• Design functional validation and benchmark comparisons covering uptake, payload delivery, cytotoxic or pathway activity, bystander effects and tumor-versus-normal selectivity, with appropriate ADC and payload controls.
• Integrate DAR distribution, free payload, aggregation, conjugate stability, in vivo efficacy and exposure data with conjugation, DMPK and CMC colleagues to assess molecular trade-offs.
• Lead CRO and platform partner workplans, experimental priorities, budgets and acceptance criteria; coordinate antibody production, conjugation and testing across iterative optimization rounds.
• Work with computational designers, the AI scientist and data colleagues to connect sequence, conjugate and assay metadata, capture negative results and guide the next design cycle.
• Assemble evidence for candidate qualification and selected progression toward preclinical candidate nomination; communicate risks and decisions and contribute to IP reviews and scientific reports.
Required qualifications
• PhD in antibody or protein engineering, pharmacology, biochemistry or a related discipline, typically with at least 5 years of relevant industry experience; an MSc with equivalent scientific leadership experience will be considered.
• Demonstrated ADC discovery or lead optimization experience, including scientific ownership of an ADC workstream or program and contribution to experimentally supported lead selection.
• Strong antibody engineering and experimental judgment, including interpretation of binding, internalization, functional and developability data in the context of conjugated molecules.
• Ability to connect antibody, linker-payload and conjugation choices with efficacy, selectivity, stability and exposure, and to coordinate specialist teams and CRO delivery.
• Sound quantitative analysis and scientific communication, with the ability to evaluate AI predictions critically and turn experimental feedback into actionable design questions.
Preferred experience
• Experience with bispecific ADCs, conditional or pH-dependent antibodies, non-cytotoxic payloads, patient-derived organoids or mechanistic resistance studies.
• Experience with site-specific conjugation, in vivo efficacy and PK studies, or advancing ADC leads through formal candidate qualification reviews.
