What you would be doing:
Product development
Lead development of the footwear line from design concept through production confirmation, holding performance, fit, and aesthetic standards at every gate.
Act as the primary technical partner to Design and Product Management. Convert design intent into buildable product without giving up function or aesthetic.
Own tech packs, bills of material, and technical specifications - accurate, current, and clear enough for a factory to build from without interpretation.
Run fit and wear testing protocols. Analyze the feedback and drive the iterations that close gaps in comfort, support, and durability.
Hold the development calendar. Surface risk early and bring the solution with it.
Factory and partner management
Own the working relationship with factory partners: daily execution, technical standards, and quality expectations.
Establish technical metrics and scorecards with the partner base and run a regular cadence of review and action against them.
Serve as the escalation point for complex technical and production problems. Resolve them at the factory before they reach the calendar.
Partner with materials and tooling experts to test, validate, and introduce new compounds, textiles, and construction methods - uppers and bottoms.
Cost and commercial
Build and scrutinize cost breakdowns. Verify that price and margin targets are achievable before a product is committed.
Drive cost solutions through construction, material, and tooling choices. Negotiate with the factory base from a position of technical fact.
Optimize construction for volume production while protecting the integrity of the product.
Team and process
Build the development process where none exists yet: standards, gates, documentation, and ways of working.
Raise the level of the people around you through your own expertise.
Identify bottlenecks in the creation process and fix them. Process evolution is part of the job.
Connect the China team with global footwear so technical detail is not lost between markets, languages, or time zones.
Key competencies:
Technical depth & design translation - Footwear construction, lasts, pattern engineering, tooling, foams and rubbers, upper and bottom materials, and manufacturing processes. Reads and interprets 2D and 3D technical drawings. Interprets design intent and finds the construction that delivers it.
Factory leadership - Sets standards with Tier 1 and Tier 2 partners and holds them there. Proven performance history with manufacturers.
Cost and margin knowledge - Costing, cost engineering, and negotiation grounded in technical fact rather than pressure.
Systems and documentation - Disciplined accuracy in BOMs and specs. Fluent in a footwear PLM or materials management system.
Cross-functional work - able to drive alignment across Design, Product Management, Sourcing, Quality, and Planning.
Cross-cultural communication - Clear written and verbal communication across China-based teams, global stakeholders, and factory partners.
Profile of the candidate:
Hands-on builder at a senior manager level. As comfortable working platform concepts with Design as correcting a tech pack. No job is too small.
Works well in ambiguity. In a business being built, priorities move; you treat the shift as an opening rather than a roadblock.
Biased for action, with guardrails. Knows when to move fast and when to stop and protect quality.
Problem solver by instinct. Goes to root cause and arrives with a solution, not only a flag.
Comfortable with constructive friction. Takes pushback from Design and Product Management and uses it to sharpen the product.
Operates independently and keeps the wider team aligned at the same time.
Entrepreneurial. Makes decisions and takes calculated risks with incomplete information.
Continuous learner. Scouts new materials, methods, and manufacturing technology, and brings them back to the line.
Credible with factories and with executives, and tells both the same technical truth.
Experience required:
8 to 10+ years in footwear development, engineering, or manufacturing, including direct experience in Asia-based manufacturing environments.
Proven record working on complex, performance-driven & lifestyle footwear from concept to mass production.
Direct working experience with Tier 1 and Tier 2 partners in Asia. Established China factory relationships preferred.
Ability building development processes and teams where structure did not previously exist, and leading through scale.
Working knowledge of a footwear PLM or materials management system (Centric, Plasma, PCX, or equivalent).
Undergraduate degree in engineering or another technical field, or equivalent industry training, certification, and experience.
