The role
You will lead grid connection and compliance for the utility-scale BESS we supply to projects up to 400 kV in Italy. Scope interfaces vary between projects and parties; whatever the split, you lead the technical interface with Terna and follow each connection from the initial solution through to COD.
You are also our in-house expert on the Italian grid, enabling our tender, delivery and R&D teams.
Key responsibilities
Lead the technical interface with Terna, and DSOs where relevant, and coordinate grid-related scope with all project parties through the connection journey to COD.
Guide internal teams in developing the initial BESS solution, and review grid requirements, clarifications and deviations at tender stage.
Ensure compliance with Terna's Grid Code (Codice di Rete), in particular Allegato A.79 for electrochemical storage, and NC RfG; maintain the grid compliance matrix.
Specify and review grid studies and RMS/EMT models to Terna's requirements (load flow, short circuit, reactive power, power quality, fault ride-through, grid-forming) with internal teams and engineering consultancies, including RfP documents for external consulting work that meet the project's Employer's Requirements (ER).
Manage equipment certification and conformity evidence with test labs, certification bodies and PCS suppliers, and the documentation Terna needs before energisation (e.g. Regolamento di Esercizio).
Support commissioning with expert guidance on grid compliance testing and PCS, EMS and power plant controller tuning through energisation.
Enable tender, delivery and R&D teams with grid-code guidance, templates and lessons learned, and input on PCS, EMS and BMS requirements.
Translate Italian energy policy, in particular MACSE, into requirements for our BESS solution and delivery, and track grid-code and market changes such as A.79 revisions and the connection reform.
Requirements
Degree in electrical engineering (power systems or power electronics) or equivalent.
5+ years in grid connection, grid compliance or HV project engineering in the Italian market, with at least one HV/EHV project connected to the national transmission grid (RTN) taken to COD. Italian market experience is essential.
Strong knowledge of Terna's Codice di Rete (including Allegato A.79), CEI 0-16, NC RfG and Italian connection practice.
Solid understanding of Italian energy policy and market design, in particular MACSE: auction rules, technical and availability obligations, and their impact on BESS design and delivery.
Deep understanding of inverter-based technology and BESS systems: PCS, EMS, BMS, power plant controller and HV interface.
Knowledge of grid-forming technology and how to specify, model and test it.
Able to scope and challenge grid studies and simulation results.
Fluent English; professional Italian strongly preferred. Willing to travel to Italy regularly.
Nice to have
Connection process experience in Italy: STMG, STMD, connection contracts and Terna's new Open Season procedure.
Experience with MACSE or Capacity Market projects.
Experience at Terna, a grid consultancy, a test lab or a certification body.
PowerFactory and/or PSCAD modelling skills.
Supplier or system-integrator experience on utility-scale BESS projects.
Understanding of BESS project engineering and Italian permitting regimes (e.g. PAS, Autorizzazione Unica).
